Derby BESS

Woolnorth Renewables are proposing to install a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) near Derby.

The Derby BESS will improve grid stability by providing a range of support services to the electricity network. A more supported electricity network creates a more reliable power supply for Tasmanians.

About the project

The proposed Derby BESS will operate as a separate power utility and provide a range of services to support and create a stronger electricity network for Tasmania. The support services and project benefits include:

  • support and stabilise the electricity grid in real time
  • support Tasmania’s 200% renewable energy target
  • support the maximum use of Tasmania’s renewable generators by storing green power

The BESS will also be able to supply electricity to the grid in the same way as a normal power plant.

The current proposal is for the installation to have a 40MW/80MWH capacity.

Woolnorth Renewables have purchased 31662 Tasman Highway for the project. The site is next to the TasNetworks substation located about 2.6 kms north of Derby, which is also the grid connection point for our Musselroe Wind Farm.
